SUNDERLAND were linked to free agent Michael Owen over the weekend but the Black Cats are believed to have no interest in the former England striker.

The 32-year-old ex-Liverpool, Newcastle United and Manchester United frontman (pictured)is without a club since his contract expired at Old Trafford in the summer and is currently looking for a way back into the Premier League.

Although he has had offers from Europe, he is keen to stay in England with Liverpool, Everton and Stoke City the clubs most strongly linked with recruiting a player who has had serious injury problems but who remains a class act when he is able to play.

Sunderland’s name was thrown into the mix on Sunday and it’s likely the Black Cats did make an inquiry over the summer to check out his situation.

Manager Martin O’Neill was desperate to add genuine experience to his front-line in the close season and Owen would have been one of the names on the radar.

But in the end the manager was able to bring in fellow free agent and ex-Manchester United striker 34-year-old Louis Saha and it’s at that stage that all interest in Owen probably ceased.

O’Neill said recently: “There’s a lot of players across Europe who fall into the same category as Louis but I think that he’s the best type of his player around at the moment.”

Liverpool are predicted to step up an interest in Owen now that a disastrous transfer window has left the Reds with only two recognised strikers to call on.
