ROBBIE Weir has joined fellow Sunderland youngster Michael Kay at League One Tranmere Rovers and could be set for an extended stay at Prenton Park.
Northern Ireland U21 midfielder Weir agreed a loan move to Tranmere until the end of the season yesterday with boss Les Parry hoping to make the switch permanent in the summer.
The 22-year-old has spent the last week training with Rovers after his half season loan at non-league York City came to an end last month.
Weir, a regular for Sunderland’s second string last season, is expected to make his Tranmere bow against Sheffield Wednesday tonight alongside Kay.
Right-back Kay joined Tranmere on loan last month with the 21-year-old in talks to make his move permanent.
Weir failed to make a first-team appearance during his five years on Wearside after progressing through the youth system following his move from Northern Irish club Larne.
Meanwhile, Sunderland’s reserve game with West Ham has been rescheduled. The game on Tuesday, March 8 will now kick-off at 3pm in a behind closed doors encounter at the Academy of Light rather than its original 7pm start at Eppleton CW.
