Carlton Fairweather’s side conceded five goals for the second time inside five days when they were beaten 5-0 at home by Chelsea last night.

It followed on from a 5-1 mauling at Arsenal on Saturday and was the team’s fourth defeat on the spin.

Furness, who led the fight last night at Eppleton CW, said: “You can’t take anything away from Chelsea – they won WSL1 last year and are a brilliant team.

“But there is a lot of frustration from our side, we are conceding stupid, sloppy goals. We need to cut that out, we can’t afford to be conceding four or five goals every week.

“We were in the game for 25 minutes, we were nice and compact and sticking to our gameplan.

“But we need to cut out the silly mistakes, stop conceding and try to make our ownplay count when we get to the other end.”

Sunderland get a break from their WSL1 relegation battle this Sunday when they visit basement rivals, Doncaster, in the Continental Cup.

“We’ve got to be up for it and go for the win, which will get us going ,” said Furness. “I don’t think we’ve got started yet.

“We need to hit the ground running on Sunday and look to get that win. We’ve got to be positive and believe we can get the result.”
