SUNDERLAND will discover today whether left-back Patrick van Aanholt requires an operation on his injured shoulder.

Van Aanholt was stretchered off in Monday night’s victory at Crystal Palace with a dislocated shoulder and will be out for several weeks.

But if the 24-year-old needs to go under the knife, he will face a longer spell on the sidelines, with the club due to learn the prognosis on the former Chelsea man today.

Gus Poyet said: “We need to know whether or not he needs an operation and that will be decided today.

“It’s going to be weeks.

“If it’s an operation, you will know the length of time after the surgery.”

With van Aanholt, Billy Jones and Sebastian Coates all on the sidelines, Black Cats boss Poyet has only four fit defenders available in his first-team squad to face Everton this weekend.

However, the subsequent two-week international break will offer Sunderland some respite, with Poyet hopeful that Coates and possibly Jones will be fit when the Black Cats return to Premier League action at Leicester on November 22.

“I don’t know what to say about the defence or how it’s going to be (on Sunday)” said Poyet.

“But the international week will bring Coates back and Billy closer.

“We need to get through this game.

“I think it’s important that we get as many players back as possible.

“When the whole squad is training every day, the quality of training, the consistency and competition for places is bigger and it’s better for the performance at the weekend.

“We’ve been training with players from the Under-21s, and probably someone will make the bench.

“So yes, we are desperate for the international break.”
