SUNDERLAND will face Southampton at the Stadium of Light in the fifth round of the FA Cup next month.
It’s a decent draw for Gus Poyet’s Black Cats who keep up their amazing record of being drawn at home in EVERY cup game this season.
The Capital One Cup finalists, one of the last names drawn out of the bag, will have to beat good Premier League opposition to reach the last eight of the competition.
Ideally, Sunderland would have drawn one of the few Championship sides remaining in the competition - Brighton, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest or Wigan.
But they also avoided the really big hitters, with current top four - Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool - all still in the hunt in the oldest and most prestigious domestic cup competition in football.
Sunderland’s record against Southampton this season is a good one - drawing twice with Mauricio Pochettino’s men in the league and beating them 2-1 in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup in November thanks to goals from from Phil Bardsley and Seb Larsson.
Sunderland reached the fifth round over the weekend thanks to a 1-0 win over Conference outfit Kidderminster Harriers, having despatched Carlisle United 3-1 in the third round.
All ties will be played over the weekend of February 15 and 16.
