SEBASTIAN Coates hopes that yesterday’s 1-0 victory at Newcastle United – Sunderland’s first Premier League win in seven – will prove to be a foundation for the Black Cats.

Second-bottom Hull City are next up at the Stadium of Light on Boxing Day, with Steve Bruce’s side on a torrid run of just two points from their last eight games.

“That should be great for our confidence because we’ve been drawing so many games,” said on-loan defender Coates.

“We knew we were doing well in the games, but didn’t get the results.

“We’re pleased to achieve this result and try to take that into Hull now.

“Hopefully we can carry on winning against Hull.”
