Sunderland defender Adam Matthews’ season is over – and so could his Euro 16 dream.
The full-back, on loan until the end of the campaign at Bristol City, injured his hamstring in the weekend’s 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers and won’t feature again this term.
Matthews has been a major success since joining City on loan from the Black Cats in early March, helping them retain their Championship status.
Forced to limp off with a pulled hamstring midway through the second half, the 24-year-old defender will now sit out the final two games against Huddersfield and QPR.
And the setback could jeopardise his lingering chances of representing Wales at this summer’s European Championship finals in France.
Matthews earned a shock recall last month to the Wales team after an absence of almost three years, and played the full 90 minutes against Northern Ireland to prompt hopes that he could be a late inclusion in Chris Coleman’s plans for the summer tournament.
