GUS Poyet says every one of Sunderland’s out-of-contract players now know where they stand and the club is looking to get “at least three or four” to agree new deals.
The Uruguayan sat down with his players after Sunderland’s Premier League future was confirmed with victory over West Bromwich Albion last Wednesday.
And now he says the club will wait to see how talks work out before pushing ahead with signings this summer.
“Shortly, we will make an announcement on players who are out of contract and then we will have a negotiation,” said Poyet.
“We will all look at our options, but we are looking to have a conversation with three or four of them – at least.
“And then we will see where we go from there because we won’t know exactly who we might going for until we know exactly who will be staying.”
Half-a-dozen players are out of contract this summer – Phil Bardsley, Jack Colback, Seb Larsson, Keiren Westwood, Craig Gardner and Carlos Cuellar.
But there are also half-a-dozen players who are not permanent signings but who have been on contracts which are ending.
Fabio Borini, Ki Sung-Yueng and Ondrej Celustka have been on season-long loans with the Black Cats, while Marcos Alonso, Santiago Vergini and Oscar Ustari, who joined Sunderland in the January transfer window all have contracts which provisionally are at an end.
Poyet added: “It is a negotiation.
“We have players who will not be here next season and we have some players who we hope will be here – we have talked to them all.
“Now it will be a case of everyone considering their options.
“They are bound to have options, we have options and we just see how it goes.”
