Sunderland went down 1-0 at home to Southampton to leave them four points from safety going into the international break.

A Dusan Tadic penalty after a silly foul from Yann M'Vila was enough to seal the win for Ronald Koeman's side as Sunderland made it back-to-back defeats.

Who stood out for Sunderland? Richard Mennear gives his ratings below.

Costel Pantilimon: 7, MOM. Great save to deny Tadic 15 minutes in, out quick and spread himself well. Saved well from Mane five minutes later too. Didn't make any mistakes.

Billy Jones: 6, Made a couple of important blocks. Rarely got forward though, Allardyce keen to keep it tight at the back.

Younes Kaboul (c): 7, Marshalled the defence well on his return from injury, took the captain's armband. Just about managed to contain Pelle.

Sebastian Coates: 6, Caught sleeping for Tadic's 15th minute effort, Pantilimon rescued him. More assured after that though. Brilliant block on the line to deny Davis.

DeAndre Yedlin: 6, Restricted going forward as SAFC played flat back four. Defensively much better, won his share of headers too. Very brave to deny Mane on the line second half.

Yann M’Vila: 5, Marshalled the midfield well and provided cover defensively, much more successfully than at Everton. Undid his good work with silly penalty conceded for foul on Bertrand.

Jordi Gomez: 5, In for Lee Cattermole ahead of Jack Rodwell. Didn't really impact the game too much. Subbed for Defoe midway through second-half.

Ola Toivonen 4: Very poor. Offered little. One shot in the first half was particularly horrendous, the linesman almost having to make a save. Subbed at half-time.

Adam Johnson: 5, Struggled to get into the game and provide any danger from the flanks first half. Brighter second half after being moved behind Fletcher. Free-kick curled just wide.

Duncan Watmore: 5, Bright from the off, with the crowd fully behind him, faded after that though. Worked hard but looked a little raw. Pushed up front alongside Defoe later. Tough full debut.

Steven Fletcher: 5, Isolated up front. Worked hard. Not much support. Had a battle against former Sunderland target Virgil Van Dijk.

Subs:

Fabio Borini (for Toivonen, 45), 6: Looked bright when he came on, saw a half-volley well saved.

Jack Rodwell (for Fletcher, 70), 5: Bizarre substitution, with Fletcher coming off and Rodwell on when Sunderland were a goal down. Didn't do much.

Jermain Defoe (for Gomez, 74), 5: Came on up front alongside Watmore.

Subs Not Used: Mannone (gk), van Aanholt, Brown, Lens.

Booked: (Johnson, 44)

Romeu (for Clasie, 78), 6.
