Meanwhile, ahead of the trip to Arsenal on Saturday, the Sunderland boss has been dealt a double injury blow.

Both Jermain Defoe and Seb Larsson have been ruled out through injury.

Striker Defoe has a minor hamstring problem, but could be available for next week's visit of Watford.

The injury to Larsson is more serious, with the Swedish international wearing a protective knee brace for a medial ligament issue.

Larsson has just returned from Barcelona to see a specialist, although the time-scale is uncertain over the extent of the midfielder's lay-off.
