Reports today have indicated that Boro are readying a bid for Cattermole, who has another five years to run on his Sunderland contract after penning a new deal last summer.

But the Echo understands that there is little prospect of the 28-year-old returning to the Riverside, particularly with another five years to run on his Stadium of Light deal.

Meanwhile, Sunderland have been linked with a couple of big money moves for new recruits.

Sunderland and West Brom have been credited with an interest in Norwich side's left-sided player Robbie Brady, who has been given a £12m price tag by the Canaries.

Brady can operate as an attacking midfielder, but he was predominantly used as a left-back last season, which is not thought to be a priority position for the Black Cats.

Sunderland are eager to bring in a new right-back, although they have made no fresh move for January target Lamine Gassama. Read the full story here.

However, Sunderland have been linked with an ambitious move for PSG right-back Serge Aurier.

Sunderland would need to shell out a fee in excess of £10m for Aurier, but the Ivory Coast international has lost his starting spot at PSG.
