Manchester United eventually hit back through Anthony Martial's fine chip at the near post six minutes before the break.

But Lamine Kone's header was deflected into his own goal by David De Gea to seal a prescious three points.

Richard Mennear gives his player ratings here:

Sunderland (4-1-4-1):

Vito Mannone: Made an excellent save from Mata but couldn't keep out Martial's sublime effort from rebound. Uncomfortable on crosses. Key saves late on....7

DeAndre Yedlin: In for Jones and defended well. Chance for him to establish run in the Sunderland side.....7

John O’Shea (C): Made three important near-post blocks early on and was sold throughout, winning his headers. Commanding display...8

Lamine Kone: Solid again at the back for Sunderland alongside O'Shea. Carved out a great chance late on but De Gea saved. His booming header led to winner...8

Patrick van Aanholt: Linked up well again with Khazri down the left and defended well enough. Hs been much improved recently...6

Jan Kirchhoff: Taken off after just 16 minutes due to a hamstring problem.....5

Lee Cattermole: Improved performance from Liverpool. Second half he impressed, playing in two excellent passes but Sunderland couldn't capitalise....7

Yann M’Vila: Dropped into the holding midfield role after Kirchhoff's early departure. His influence second half was immense, throwing himself at everthing....7

Wahbi Khazri: MOM.Got Sunderland off to the perfect start with a deceptive minute free-kick after three minutes. Worked really hard again. Pace, power, workrate, has the lot. Assist too.....8

Dame N’Doye: Struggled to get into the game first half, pushed wide right again. Improvement second and saw more of the ball, willing runner and had shot saved by De Gea.....6

Jermain Defoe: Great dummy for the opening goal. Should have made it 2-0 shortly after under pressure from Smalling. Blind denied him second half....6

Sub:

Jack Rodwell (for Kirchhoff, 15): An early sub in place of injured Kirchhoff. Didn't impact the game as Allardyce would have hoped.....6

Fabio Borini (for Defoe, 71): Came on for Defore, with N'Doye going up front. Willing runner and added some legs to the right-hand side....6

Ola Toivonen (for Cattermole, 85): Helped seal the win....6
