Sunderland remain rooted to second bottom of the table after an insipid defeat to Bristol City.

Here's how the Black Cats rated...

JASON STEELE

Much more commanding in the second half and claimed the ball well but was stuck on his line for the first goal in a worrying replica of QPR's goal here last time out. Good save to deny O'Dowda 70 minutes in. 5

BILLY JONES

Caught out of position regularly and unusually looked better going forward, almost assisting Grabban and playing a part in the goal. Came close late on. 4

JOHN O'SHEA

Bullied by the powerful Djuric for the winning goal. 5

LAMINE KONE

Didn't do anywhere near enough to stop the cross for the second goal and generally never imposed himself on the game. Early on looked well off the pace. 4

BRYAN OVIEDO

A threat going forward and powerful in defence, reliable and making some good interceptions. 6

DIDIER NDONG

Unfortunate to be booked early on and did as much as anyone to drive Sunderland on with a number of strong tackles. 6

DARRON GIBSON (McNair, 78)

Started well, moving the ball at a decent tempo and winning some good challenges playing as the anchor in midfield. Influence waned dramatically as game developed. 5

DUNCAN WATMORE (Vaughan, 78)

Couldn't quite find the space and end product that made him so dangerous at Griffin Park but it was his shot that led to Grabban's equaliser. 5

JONNY WILLIAMS (McManaman, 76)

Helped Sunderland generally keep the ball better than they have done in recent games at home but on the whole quality of his play was a disappointment. 5

AIDEN McGEADY

Excellent cross forced Fielding to palm into a dangerous area for the first goal. Unable to really open the Bristol defence up otherwise and standard of crossing a real disappointment in the second half. 5

LEWIS GRABBAN

Service to the centre-forward was poor, particularly in the second half, but again showed he has the knack of being in the right place at the right time to score. 6
