Sunderland remain deep in relegation trouble after a 1-0 home defeat to high-flying Watford at the Stadium of Light.
A fourth minute goal from Odion Ighalo was enough to separate the two sides, with Sunderland not posing a real threat until deep into the second half.
Who scooped the man of the match award? Richard Mennear gives his ratings below:
Costel Pantilimon: 6: Could have done more to prevent opening goal. Made a smart diving save midway through first half to deny Capoue.
DeAndre Yedlin: 4. Suspect defensively and was hauled off after 19 minutes as Allardyce reverted to a flat-back four. Had given the ball away too often.
Sebastian Coates: 6. Was beaten to the ball by Ighalo for the opening goal, made a wonderful goal-line clearance though. Defended well against Ighalo's breaks second half.
John O'Shea: 5. Tough afternoon for the Sunderland defence. As a unit, they were torn apart in the opening half hour.
Billy Jones: 5: In for Younes Kaboul, who was out through illness. Caught out of position for the goal, improved when he moved to right-back.
Patrick van Aanholt: 5. Broke forward when the opportunity arose. One effort minutes into the second half was well wide though.
Yann M'Vila: 6. Not his finest game, lost possession too easily at times. Set pieces caused problems.
Ola Toivonen: 4. Poor from the Swede. He impressed at Arsenal but was way off the pace here. Fortunate not to be subbed. Marginally improved second half.
Duncan Watmore: 6. Worked hard, made a couple of good runs. Was crowded out though. Needed to provide more support to Fletcher up front and did second half. A threat.
Fabio Borini: 5 Not great from Borini, flashed one shot just wide of the post. Too many poor crosses though from good positions. Subbed early on.
Steven Fletcher: 6. Gave the ball away and wasn't a goal threat in the first half. Worked much harder second half, including one mazy run. No support though. Subbed.
Jack Rodwell (for Yedlin, 19): 7. Produced some clever turns, one crunching tackle early on. Powerful shot saved start of second half. Three high over the bar.
Adam Johnson (for Fabio Borini, 57): 6. A few passes overhit but showed some nice touches in the final third. Shot wide late on, really good chance.
Jermain Defoe (for Fletcher,72): 7. MOM. Was a big threat when he came on. Forced Gomes ino a fantastic save and flicked one effort just past the post.
Subs Not Used: Mannone, Matthews, Lens, Graham.
Booked: Rodwell (60)
