Sunderland climbed to eighth place in the Premier League – temporarily at least – after working hard for a goalless draw against Tottenham at the Stadium of Light.
Nicklas Bendtner and Craig Gardner both went close in the first half, denied by keeper Brad Friedel in quick succession before James McClean headed over.
A goal-bound Stephane Sessegnon effort struck the legs of William Gallas, and a brilliant Kyle Walker interception denying a simple chance for winger McClean.
Gareth Bale headed Tottenham’s best chance onto the roof of the net as Harry Redknapp’s men failed to put pressure on their rivals for a Champions League place.
Their goalless draw was enough to nudge Spurs above Arsenal up to third, but it was a frustrating afternoon for Redknapp with Emmanuel Adebayor and Rafael Van der Vaart also missing chances.
