Richard Mennear gives his player ratings below:

Sunderland (5-3-2)

Vito Mannone: Could do little about Southampton's goals, left exposed by the defence. Comfortable saves from Tadic and Long second half. Distribution was rushed....5

Billy Jones: Poor marking for Gabbiadini's first, Bertrand had acres of space to pick a cross. Bad day for the defence.....5

Jason Denayer: Looks far more comfortable in central defence and was probably the pick of the three centre-backs - not that says much. Scored a late own-goal....5

John O'Shea (C): Left exposed for the second goal, Gabbiadini had too much time and space to turn him and Kone. Subbed at half-time.....4

Lamine Kone: Having been so impressive for two games, Kone was poor against the Saints. Certainly at fault for the second goal, stood off Gabbiadini and made it too easy.....4

Bryan Oviedo: Started where he left off at Palace, always looking to move forward. Solid if not spectacular display.....5

Seb Larsson: Saw plenty of the ball in the opening stages, was almost in but Saints cleared the ball as he was about to fire. Little impact, subbed after less than an hour....5

Darron Gibson: Excellent start, dictating play in the centre of midfield. Kept it nice and simple but once Saints scored their first, Sunderland's midfield was dominated.....6. MOM.

Didier Ndong: Bright and full of energy to start with but got increasingly frustrated. Gave the ball away too often.....5

Adnan Januzaj: Playing with a smile on his face in the opening half hour, linking up well with Sunderland midfield. Impast lessened as game wore on.....5

Jermain Defoe: Had very few openings. Half-hearted penalty appeal turned down first half. Fraser Forster had very little to do. Frustrating afternoon....5

Subs: Steven Pienaar (for O'Shea, 45) Moyes switched to a flat-back four second half, with Pienaar on in midfield. Had little impact, though.....5

Fabio Borini (for Seb Larsson, 58) Brought onto bolster Sunderland's attacking threat but offered little. Saw a header glance wide....5

Wahbi Khazri (for Gibson, 81): Came on when Sunderland were 2-0 down and the game was already over...5

Subs Not Used: Mika, Manquillo, Lescott, Honeyman.

Booked: Khazri (90+4)

Goals: None
