MANAGER Bob Stokoe’s expected reshuffle in the Sunderland team to meet Notts County in the FA Cup (Third Round) at Meadow Lane tomorrow afternoon provides king-size tasks for youth team products John Tones and Jackie Ashurst. Tones, who made his first team debut a month ago, is given preference over Richie Pitt as replacement for David Young in the back four and Ashurst will link with Ian Porterfield and Mick Horswill in the vital midfield battle.
Both earn their chances to tackle specialist tasks on the strength of the outstanding form which they have shown in these roles in recent Reserves games.
And Mr Stokoe will be well pleased if they output against Notts County tomorrow reaches up to the level which they achieved against County Reserves in a North Midlands League match on Wednesday night.
Compared with the side which claimed a 4-0 win over Brighton there are two changes in personnel. Young, who is barred under the 14-day signing rule, and John Lathan stand down to be replaced by Tones and Ashurst. The only positional changes takes Billy Hughes from No. 8 to No. 9.
“For obvious reasons, we had the extra forward in against Brighton,” said Mr Stokoe. “Tomorrow we tighten up again, but we are not going to be defensive-minded by any means. Notts Country have one or two really big fellows who need to be taken care of and this is what I’m looking for.
“Bobby Kerr can stay at the front with Billy Hughes and Dennis Tueart and I am sure they will get goals.”
Although they are side-lined for the Cup-tie, both David Young and Ron Guthrie will be travelling with the Sunderland team as part of their settling in programme.
With Willie Carlin still undergoing treatment for a pulled muscle, Notts County will be fielding unchanged side, which include five six-footers and another in Ian Bolton as substitute.
The line-up will be:
Notts County: Brown, Brindley and Worthington, Masson, Needham and Stubbs Nixon, Randall, Bradd, Mann and Carter. Substitute, Bolton I.
Sunderland: Montgomery, Malone and Bolton J, Horswill, Watson and Tones, Kerr, Ashurst, Hughes, Porterfield and Tueart. Substitute, Lathan or McGiven.
