FORMER Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is not surprised his successor Martin O’Neill has been an instant success.

The Black Cats have won five of the eight games O’Neill has taken charge of and now look forward to three successive home games against Swansea, Middlesbrough and Norwich City.

Sunderland were floundering near the foot of the table with only two wins from their opening 13 league fixtures when Bruce paid the price.

He wishes he was given the time to reverse fortunes, the ex-Wigan and Birmingham manager admitting: “Frustration is there because I knew the nucleus of the side was decent.

“We just didn’t have that bit of luck that is needed.

“They are a good squad of players; decent lads. Martin has inherited a decent squad.

“Martin has done remarkably well, which I knew he would do.

“I wish them well.’
