Tottenham right-back DeAndre Yedlin has sealed a season-long loan switch to Sunderland, to complete the Black Cats’ summer spending.

After splashing out £7.75million to re-sign Fabio Borini, Sunderland’s priority on deadline day was to add a defender to their squad on a loan deal from one of their Premier League rivals.

And Sunderland have fulfilled that objective after securing American international Yedlin from Spurs, who becomes the Black Cats’ eighth capture of the summer.

The 22-year-old is currently with the USA squad on the other side of the Atlantic, but has not proved to be a barrier towards Sunderland’s pursuit of the right-back.

DeYedlin joined Spurs from Seattle Sounders last summer, but was allowed to re-join the MLS outfit on loan until January.

When Yedlin finally linked up with Spurs in January, he was limited to just one Premier League appearance - April’s defeat at Aston Villa.

There had been interest on the Continent for Yedlin, including Belgian side Anderlecht, but he remained at Spurs after the European transfer deadline shut last night.

He will provide a much-needed defensive boost for Dick Advocaat after Sunderland full-backs Billy Jones and Patrick van Aanholt have both struggled during the opening four Premier League games.

However, Yedlin will not be able to make his Sunderland debut when the Black Cats return to Premier League action a week on Sunday against his parent club Spurs.
