Former Sunderland target Virgil van Dijk scored a dramatic injury-time equaliser For Southampton to deny the Black Cats all three points.

Sub Jermain Defoe had given them an 85th minute lead but their hopes of a much-needed win and clean sheet were dashed late on.

Here are Richard Mennear's player ratings:

Sunderland (4-1-4-1):

Vito Mannone: Strong save to deny Tadic midway through first half, palming the ball over. Also saved from Van Dijk, Romeu too and Pelle late on....7

DeAndre Yedlin: Had his hands full with Tadic. Got forward when he could to support Borini. Tadic provided the cross late on for Van Dijk's equaliser...6

Younes Kaboul: Stand-in captain with O'Shea on bench and did well with some booming headers and timely interceptions. Defence just couldn't hold on....7

Lamine Kone: Defended well alongside Kaboul. Helped keep Pelle under wraps. Provided the assist for Defoe's goal....7

Patrick van Aanholt: Still big question marks over his defensive game. Too indecisive at times. Saw a free-kick saved......6

Jan Kirchhoff: Won a lot of second balls and again impressed in the holding midfield role. Helped nullify Saints threat. MOM.....8

Yann M'Vila: Quiet first half. Had more of an influence second half, pressed further forward for Sunderland......6

Jack Rodwell: Flashed a volley wide from a great position. Not as influential as against Crystal Palace. Played his part second half though....6

Wahbi Khazri: After an indifferent start, Khazri grew into the game and hit the post with a free-kick. Always looks a threat, from set pieces especially.....6

Fabio Borini: Should have shot earlier when put in by N'Doye first half. Saw a superb volley just dip over crossbar and shot saved by Forster. Superb workrate.....7

Dame N'Doye: Led the line in place of dropped Defoe. Didn't win many headers or impose himself on Saints back two. Offered little. Subbed.....5

Subs:

Jermain Defoe (for N'Doye, 59): Great finish from close range. It wasn't enough though as Sunderland were pegged back late on...7

Seb Larsson (for Khazri, 76): Helped add some bite to the midfield....6

John O'Shea (for Kirchhoff, 90): Came on late to shore up the defence but Van Dijk struck a last-gasp equaliser...6
