MATCH RATINGS

Sunderland (4-2-3-1):

Jordan Pickford: Had little to do first half. Uncharacteristically flapped at a couple of corners second half. Could do little with the goal. 6.

Billy Jones: Involved in a clash of heads but fine to carry on. Tried to get forward often. 6

Papy Djilobodji: Important sliding tackle first half and overall played well. His diagonal long balls are a dangerous weapon for Sunderland. 7.

Lamine Kone (C): Captain for the night, Sunderland defended well, a stunning goal did for them. 7

Patrick van Aanholt: Wasteful in possession at times. Khazri should have done more with one of his passes but missed the ball. 6

Paddy McNair: Played in an unorthodox role on the left-side of midfield. Has played everywhere else. Not involved enough. 5

Jack Rodwell: Tidy in possession but nothing more. Blasted an effort over the crossbar. 5

Didier Ndong: Far too many stray passes from the club’s record signing. Not his night. 5

Wahbi Khazri: Loses possession too easily, much to Moyes’ frustration. Wasted two openings first half. 5.

Duncan Watmore: Worked hard but little end product. Caused Saints problems with his pace. 6.

Victor Anichebe: First start for Sunderland. Starved of service. Put himself about when he did have the ball and won a couple of free-kicks. Could have had penalty. 6

Subs:

Jermain Defoe (for Khazri, 72): Saw a low shot saved by McCarthy. Good chance. 6.

Lynden Gooch (for Watmore, 87): Too late to make an impact. 5

Steven Pienaar (for McNair, 87): Same as Gooch. 5
