A SUNDERLAND midfielder from South Shields is ready to show size is no barrier as he represents England in the Under-17 European Championship.

Daniel Wright, who stands at 5ft 6in, has often found himself labelled as too small for football.

However, the youngster is set to prove all of those doubters wrong this week, with England’s first game in the championship set to take place tomorrow, against Italy in Bulgaria.

The South Shields-born Wright told TheFA.com: “I like it when people say I’m too small because I love proving them wrong.

“When I was younger playing for boys clubs I had that a lot.

“It didn’t get me down – it just made me more determined to prove them all wrong.”

Wright is now looking to add more goals to his game, and firmly believes England can go all the way in Bulgaria.

He added: “I think I’m positive when I play and I’ll always give my best in every training session.

“I like to get forward, but I know my role really well when I’m asked to sit.

“I’ve been working on my finishing back at the club and it’s starting to come off a bit in games. I’ve done a lot of shooting drills, practising my close-range finishing and long-range, I’ve been working on it all.

“We are all really positive and believe we can do well. We have to make sure that we keep the momentum going.

“We all trust each other with the ball and know what we can all do. We have to stick together.”
