Sam Allardyce thanks 'wonderful' Sunderland fans and players as he takes over at England

Big Sam has praised Sunderland fans and players after his departure to take over as England boss.

Black Cats fans were left dismayed as Sam Allardyce was named as the successor to Roy Hodgson last week, ending his time in charge at the Stadium of Light.

The news prompted an angry reaction from some, but Allardyce has now sent his best wishes to the club as he begins his work as manager of the national team.

Posting on Twitter, he said: "I am truly honoured to be the new @England manager! Looking forward to getting started & can't wait for the Slovakia game on September 4th.

"I would also like to take this time to thank @SunderlandAFC - the staff, players & fans were wonderful throughout my tenure. #HawayTheLads."

Allardyce has now been replaced by former Everton and Manchester United manager David Moyes
