SUNDERLAND’S game against Liverpool might not have been easy on the eye, but sometimes the beautiful game is not so beautiful.
That’s something that anyone who watched football in the 70s and 80s would take as read, but maybe we’ve become accustomed to the idea that all Premier League games are about silky skills, flowing moves and spectacular goals.
Saturday’s game was one of those games that you just get from time to time – a disappointment in terms of entertainment, a game which struggled to get out of first gear and in which the goalkeepers were rarely called into action.
But that said, games like these carry their own reward. If you can win them, you know you’ve worked your socks off to get the result you deserve.
And managers in particular love nothing more than to win a tight, scrappy game 1-0.
