SUNDERLAND’S start to the season could not have been much worse than an abysmal one point from a possible 21.
But one thing that has been outstanding has been the attendances at the Stadium of Light.
Saturday’s game against Manchester United attracted a huge crowd of more than 45,000 to a game which was also covered live on television.
When you consider the fact that Sunderland are rock bottom of the Premier League and have lost all three of their home games before the United fixture, then you wonder just what would happen with a little bit of success.
Sunderland fans’ patience is being severely tested with the string of defeats we have suffered so far.
But what can’t be denied is the passion and loyalty of the Sunderland support.
In my opinion there’s not many clubs in England or Europe for that matter that could command such a following for regular relegation battles and numerous other disappointments.
The fans are what this club are all about and should never be taken for granted.
I know many are already planning the long and tortuous journey to South Wales for our next game at Swansea and it is for these fans that you can only hope we get the successful team they so deserve for all the time, effort and financial outlay they sacrifice in following Sunderland.
