GUS Poyet admitted he had mixed feelings at the final whistle at Upton Park – pride at Sunderland’s performance, disappointment that they had not got the win so desperately needed.
“This is the first time that I felt that we didn’t get what we deserved out of the game,” he said after the Black Cats’ goalless draw against relegation rivals West Ham. “I think we did everything we could to win it.
“I don’t like to use the word ‘luck’, but I didn’t really feel the luck went our way in front of goal on the day.
“And so I would like to say that, yeah, we didn’t look today like the worst team in the Premier League on the day
“I think we played as well as any side might have done in the bottom half of the division, but it was not enough because we need three points now, not one.
“So I’ve got mixed feelings.
“It was a good performance from us away from home and normally you would be pleased with the one point away from home.
“It is not enough for us right now though, which leaves me disappointed.
“But I can at least say that this was my team, I felt, for the first time since I got here.
“They played in the way I would have wanted them to and that has to give me encouragement.”
