GUS POYET insists his son will NOT be following him to the Stadium of Light.
Charlton midfielder Diego Poyet has been linked with a move to Sunderland, ever since his father was installed as Black Cats head coach last October.
The 18-year-old, who made his first-team debut for the Addicks in Tuesday’s FA Cup victory over Oxford United, is regarded as a bright prospect and has been capped by England at Under-16 and Under-17 levels.
But while Poyet senior is habitually reluctant to comment on specific transfer rumours, he has broken his silence to rubbish any suggestions that he will disrupt his son’s development at the Valley.
Poyet told the Echo: “I’ve seen the rumour about Diego, my son.
“But why would I want to sign my son? He’s at Charlton, just made his debut, he’s only 18. It’s going really well for him there.”
Poyet has made three additions so far during the January transfer window – securing loan deals for Marcos Alonso and Santiago Vergini, while goalkeeper Oscar Ustari has joined until the end of the season.
Sunderland were forced to make a move for the latter after fellow stopper Keiren Westwood was ruled out for the bulk of the campaign following an operation on a shoulder injury.
But the rest of Sunderland’s targets for the window have been well-planned for the last couple of months.
And Poyet has revealed that the Black Cats have pinpointed specific players, rather than looking for anyone available in a certain position.
Brighton pair Liam Bridcutt and Will Buckley are a prime example, with Sunderland hoping to wrap up moves for the duo over the next week, albeit Crystal Palace are reported to have now entered the race for the latter.
Poyet added: “We started planning for this in December. We didn’t know about Westy then, so we weren’t talking about goalkeepers then.
“But when we had confirmation of the operation, we had to start looking.
“We’re looking for specific players, that’s the key.
“It’s not positions or a body. It’s not bringing in for the sake of bringing people in.
“It’s bringing people in who will help us.
“There has to be a clear reason.”
