ADAM JOHNSON and Liam Bridcutt were notable absentees from the squad when Sunderland took on Darlington 1883 at the weekend.
But Gus Poyet was quick to reassure reporters afterwards that there were no serious concerns – after the pair were rested as a precaution.
Both could feature in the forthcoming friendlies against Carlisle United tomorrow night and Hartlepool United on Wednesday night (both 7.30pm kick-offs).
Poyet explained: “Liam Bridcutt and Adam Johnson were absent from the team with a couple of knocks.
“They were nothing serious, but it wasn’t worth taking a risk with them in the Darlington friendly.
“Liam’s fitness is coming along generally, so that’s not a worry.
“As for Adam, he was out running and he twisted his ankle.
“But it’s nothing major, we just decided to give an opportunity to a couple of the youngsters rather than taking risks with them.”
