Sunderland reporter Chris Young gives his verdict after the Black Cats’ miserable Stadium of Light defeat to Norwich City.

Costel Pantilimon: Should have pushed away shot for first goal and beaten too easily at near post for the third. 4

Billy Jones: Better than at Leicester, but lack of balance down the right frustrated his efforts to get forward. 5

Younes Kaboul: Again his lack of game-time was exposed, yet he wasn’t helped by van Aanholt’s wayward positioning. 4

Sebastian Coates: Struggling to rekindle the form he showed at the end of last season which justified his summer transfer. 4

Patrick van Aanholt: Confidence looks shot going forwards, and his defending was again desperate. 3

Lee Cattermole: Was at the heart of things for the opening 20 minutes, but then intensity went out of his game and was sleeping for the third goal. 4

Yann M’Vila: Some promising signs on his debut, even though he is still working his way back to fitness. 6

Seb Larsson: Seemed unsure whether he was playing central midfield or right wing and never made an attacking impression. 4

Jeremain Lens: Not frightened to put a tackle in and did provide some danger moments, but needs to see far more of the ball. 5

Jermain Defoe: Tried to engineer something out of nothing, but had to feed on scraps. 5

Steven Fletcher: Sent header wide with the only really chance Sunderland created until their late consolation. 5

Subs:

Danny Graham (for Larsson, 46): Typical hustle and bustle, but no real impact. 5

DUNCAN WATMORE (for Fletcher, 70): The only player in red and white who showed some hunger. 7

Subs not used: Mannone, Bridcutt, O’Shea, Matthews, Rodwell.
