SUNDERLAND reporter Chris Young gives his verdict after the Black Cats’ abysmal 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa.
Pantilimon 4 - Beaten four times, but didn’t really have a chance with any of them. Had to tip over an N’Zogbia shot early in the second half to prevent a fifth.
Reveillere 4 - The composure seems to have ebbed away from the veteran full-back over recent weeks and struggled against Villa’s pace. Couldn’t prevent Benteke getting above him to head home the fourth.
O’Shea 3 - By far the skipper’s most miserable performance of the season. Succession of mistakes, including bizarre decision to leave the ball for Villa’s second.
Brown 4 - Dragged out of position through the erratic van Aanholt and allowed Agbonlahor to walk through the Sunderland defence for Villa’s third.
Van Aanholt 3 - Given little protection, but yet again, an opposing time preyed on the left-back’s defensive deficiencies. Awful attempt at a tackle for Agbonlahor’s second.
Bridcutt 4 - Persistently caught out of position and N’Zogbia was able to find acres of space when he drifted infield.
Larsson 5 - Manfully played on after missing the start of the second half while he received stitches. One of the few who tried to press a Villa player.
RODWELL 5 - Started the game positively with a couple of surging runs. Pity the rest of the side collapsed after the opening goal.
Alvarez 3 - Didn’t look fit, didn’t look sharp and no surprise he was hooked at the interval. Flopped when handed the responsibility of being Sunderland’s creative spark. (Wickham 5 - Showed some effort and went close with a smart shot on the turn from 25 yards.)
Fletcher 5 - Given an unnatural left-wing role, yet made a decent fist of it at least. Came closest to a consolation when his stabbed shot hit the post.
Defoe 4 - Too isolated, but looked lost as a lone striker.
VILLA: Guzan 7, Lowton 7, Okore 7, Clark 7, Bacuna 9, Delph 8, Cleverley 8, N’Zogbia 8 (Weimann 6), Sinclair 7 (Sanchez 6), Agbonlahor 9, Benteke 8.
