SUNDERLAND reporter Chris Young gives his verdict on the Black Cats’ stalemate at Burnley.

Mannone 7 - Only had one meaningful save to make to deny Jutkiewicz, but off his line sharply on several occasions when the Clarets were threatening.

Vergini 6 - Solid enough defensively in keeping Boyd under wraps, but needed to make more of several promising situations when he received possession in Burnley territory.

O’Shea 6 - Struggled to deal with the muscle of Jutkiewicz and was fortunate to escape when the former Middlesbrough held him off late on and saw his shot saved by Mannone.

Brown 6 - Like O’Shea, had a physical battle with Jutkiewicz and distribution on several occasions was sloppy.

Van Aanholt 7 - Sunderland didn’t make the most of his forward runs and came as close to anyone when his injury time drive hit the post.

Cattermole 6 - Almost set the tone when his sloppy fifth minute backwards header presented Burnley with an opportunity. Several key interceptions, but wasn’t able to dictate the tempo.

Larsson 6 - Spent the first half on the right before moving centrally after the break. Worked hard in both positions, yet didn’t create anything. (Gomez 6 - unable to get a hold of the ball and inject an element of control into the visitors)

RODWELL 7 - His best game yet in a red and white shirt after genuinely going from box-to-box. Would have found the scoresheet with a more fortunate bounce of the ball.

Giaccherini 6 - Looked the most likely to conjure something, but caught in possession on several occasions too. However, Sunderland deteriorated after he limped off. (Buckley 6 - unable to pick any holes in a well-drilled Burnley defence).

Johnson 6 - Couldn’t inject that spark of quality to unlock the door which Sunderland so badly needed, despite being deployed on both flanks. (Altidore 5 - control was repeatedly poor, albeit he was used in an unfamiliar wide role).

Wickham 6 - Utterly starved of service and kept under wraps by Burnley’s centre-halves. Needed to make better decisions on few chances he did have to influence proceedings.

BURNLEY: Heaton 6, Trippier 7, Shackell 8, Duff 7, Mee 7, Arfield 6, Jones 6, Marney 6, Boyd 6, Sordell 5 (Barnes 5), Jutkiewicz 7.
