SUNDERLAND emerged with plaudits but not points from their visit to Manchester United on the day Sir Alex Ferguson celebrated 25 years at Old Trafford.
The visitors contained the champions and reduced them to half chances, while also occasionally threatening the home goal.
The match was settled by an own goal by former United favourite Wes Brown just before the break.
Sunderland had goalkeeper Kieren Westwood to thank for the fact the Red Devils did not extend their lead, the stopper pulling off a stunning double save from Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra.
Sunderland’s next game is at home to Fulham on November 19.
