JOHN O’Shea has hailed the continued impact of James McClean on Sunderland’s fortunes.
McClean, expected to hold talks over a new Sunderland deal, scored his second goal in as many top flight outings in last weekend’s defeat to Arsenal after profiting from Per Mertesacker’s slip.
It was a finish fitting of a player brimming with confidence after finding the net on three previous occasions for the Black Cats.
But it is not just McClean’s goals which have impressed centre-half O’Shea, with the winger showing no fear in tackling Arsenal’s French international full-back Bacary Sagna.
“He’s been amazing for us, he really has,” added O’Shea.
“It was a bit fortuitous how he got the chance for his goal on Saturday, but it was such a clinical finish.
“He keeps showing the fearlessness he has and it was an expert strike into the bottom corner.
“It just shows the confidence he’s playing with at the minute.
“He was up against an experienced full-back in Sagna, but James was never afraid to get at him, get crosses in and take him on.
“He’s improving on coming inside as well. That’s part of his game he’s really improving on, the awareness of not just causing teams problems by going down the outside, but darting inside as well.”
