MARTIN O’Neill says Sunderland have shown true grit since he arrived at the Stadium of Light.

O’Neill has been pleased at the way Sunderland have shown great resilience in matches so far and stressed the importance of keeping that run going.

He said: “Winning games breeds confidence more than anything else.

“The players have really enjoyed the run of results and the quality of performances we’ve managed to produce.

“One thing feeds the other and when you’ve enjoyed that winning feeling you find yourselves working harder than ever to keep it going.”

The Black Cats’ stickability has been characterised by crucial late goals

“We’ve had games where we’ve shown great character to come through the other end with a good result,” added O’Neill.

“We need to keep showing that character against Chelsea tomorrow and the games ahead, in order to build on what has been achieved so far.”
