CONNOR WICKHAM is back permanently at the Stadium of Light after Martin O’Neill finally opted to turn down Sheffield Wednesday’s proposal to keep the striker on loan.
Wickham’s month-long loan spell with the Owls came to a conclusion after last weekend’s Championship encounter at Leicester City.
Wednesday boss Dave Jones had been keen to extend the 19-year-old’s stint at Hillsborough, albeit with an instant-recall clause inserted in the deal.
Sunderland counterpart O’Neill has spent the week considering whether to let Wickham remain at Wednesday, but has ultimately opted to bring him back into the first-team picture on Wearside.
Wickham will now be available for Sunday’s crunch encounter against Norwich City.
Meanwhile, both Wickham and Sunderland team-mate Danny Rose have been included in the England Under-21 squad for friendlies against Romania and Austria on March 21 and March 25 respectively.
