Sunderland are just one point clear of the drop zone following a dismal set of results today.

While the Black Cats went down 1-0 to champions elect Manchester United, Wigan secured a vital 1-0 victory at home to Norwich to move out of the drop zone to 30 points – one point behind Sunderland, who have played a game more.

Aston Villa, who dropped into the relegation places without playing (they host Liverpool tomorrow), are also on 30 points.

Southampton, meanwhile, sealed a superb 2-1 win over Chelsea to move up to 34 points, four clear of trouble. West Ham also eased their fears with an excellent defeat of West Brom.

The table does not make good reading tonight.
