NEWCASTLE United’s new signing Papiss Demba Cisse is not thought to have been a target for Sunderland, despite reports to the contrary.
Cisse yesterday agreed a five-and-a-half year deal with the Magpies in a £9million move from German outfit Freiburg.
The Senegal striker claimed earlier in the week that Sunderland were one of the clubs interested in his services.
“I’m flattered by the interest of Sunderland and other clubs,” he said.
While Steve Bruce had considered Cisse in the summer during Sunderland’s search for attacking reinforcements, the ex-Black Cats boss scoffed at the price tag and the 26-year-old was never a genuine target for the Wearsiders.
Cisse didn’t find his way onto Sunderland’s hitlist this month either, with O’Neill yet to boost his squad during the window.
