The 28-year-old signed a new two-year deal at the Stadium of Light in the summer.

But sources in Italy suggest Napoli have made initial contact with the Black Cats as a result of fitness concerns over their number one goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

Sky Sport Italia report Reina has barely taken part in pre-season training due to muscular problems and returned to Spain for treatment.

One option they are considering as a replacement is Mannone, who is battling with Jordan Pickford to be the club’s number one.

Mannone started the 3-0 friendly win over Hartlepool United but faces big competition from England Under-21 international Pickford this season.

After being handed a second chance by Sam Allardyce at the turn of the year, Mannone became a key component in Sunderland’s survival.

Speaking about his new deal, Mannone said: “It’s a massive boost for me and my family. We love it here. I love the club and the fans, so it’s a great deal for me.”
