Match of the Day 2 Extra’s pundits have painted a bleak picture for Sunderland.

The panel on today’s show, broadcast on BBC2 and Radio 5 live, berated the Blacks Cats for their terrible defending in yesterday’s 3-2 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Ex-Sunderland winger, Kevin Kilbane, described Christian Benteke’s last-gasp winner as, defensively, “the worst goal you’ll see”, while Dean Saunders said it is understandable boss David Moyes is “frustrated” because he has not been able to sign the players he wanted.

Former Wales striker Saunders said: “The second game of the season he came out and said ‘we’re in a relegation battle’, I’ve been there as well.

“He’s not been able to sign the players he’s wanted to sign.

“He’ll be sitting there thinking ‘I haven’t got the tools to do the job’ and he hasn’t. That’s why he looks so frustrated.”

Kilbane concentrated his attention on that winner from Benteke who was given the freedom of the box before heading in Chung-Yong Lee’s free-kick.

“Worryingly, the last goal, David Moyes will work on set-pieces on the training ground,” he said.

“The goal you saw Benteke score was as bad a goal as you’ll see anywhere defensively

“That goal Sunderland conceded, they had no-one near him for nine yards.

“Eight players, or whatever it was in the box, and no-one’s been prepared to go to him.”
