Sunderland put in a stoic performance as David Moyes started his first Premier League campaign as Sunderland boss.

The Black Cats came back from a goal down to equalise before a late own goal cruelly gave Manchester City all three points. But there are plenty of positives to take from the game.

Sunderland

Vito Mannone: Ready when called upon with his best save coming in the final minutes at the feet of Iheanacho. 7

Patrick Van Aanholt: Gave a penalty away in the first four minutes with a reckless challenge on Raheem Sterling. 5

Donald Love: A nervous start and had his hands full with Nolito keen to get by him at every opportunity. A performance to build on. 5

Younes Kaboul: Kept things tight in the centre of the pitch while the defence was stretched by City's pace out wide. 7

Lamine Kone: The rumours, speculation, petition and Facebook videos seemed to have little effect on the big man's performance. His usual steady self and a real handful at set pieces. 8

John O'Shea (captain): Asked to step up into midfield alongside Jack Rodwell to negate City's runners and stuck to the task. 6

Lynden Gooch: Full of running and tried to take the game to City in the opening stages. Booked for pulling back Sterling. Substituted. 6

Jack Rodwell: Sat deep and was caught in possession a couple of times. Much better second half and slipped the ball through for Defoe's goal. 7

Fabio Borini: Started wide before being brought into the middle then pushed back out wide. Frustrating evening but always open for the ball. 6

Duncan Watmore: Full of running and created Sunderland's best chance in the first half. Substituted. 6

Jermain Defoe: Typical Defoe. Held the line and pounced when needed. Taken off with minutes to go. 8

Substitutes used:

Wahbi Khazri: Didn't get chance to influence the game as much as he'd have liked to. 6

Patrick McNair: Came on with 83 minutes to go. Scored an own goal with 87 minutes gone. Hard not to feel sorry for him. 5

Adnan Januzaj: Came on for his debut and immediately injected pace down the right flank. Changed the tempo. 7
