A last-minute Leicester goal denied Sunderland victory in today’s Under-18 Premier League Group Three clash at Aylestone today.
It had looked as though a second-half goal by leading scorer Lee Connelly would be enough to give the visitors the win, but disaster struck for Sunderland when, in time added on, City’s Thakgalo Leshabela grabbed a point for the East Midlanders.
In the first half, the Foxes were the better side and Michael Woud, in the Sunderland goal, had to pull off several superb saves.
But it was still goalless at half-time, and Sunderland regrouped to make an impact in the second period.
Their efforts were rewarded when they took the lead in the 59th minute. Owen Gamble played a great through ball to split open the defence and Connelly was on to it in a flash to clinically drive home beyond the keeper.
The Wearsiders now had to dig in and fight for the victory that looked theirs until time added on.
A bouncing ball in midfield was won by the hosts and played on to Leshabela, who cut in and curled the equaliser past a forlorn Woud.
Sunderland coach Mark Atkinson said: “It would have been an ugly win as we had to defend and compete which we did so well and it is very disappointing just not to have held on for the win.”
