Not many Sunderland players came out of last night’s 4-1 def3eat at home to Manchester City with their reputations enhanced. CHRIS YOUNG gives his ratings on the Black Cats.

Pantilimon 5 – Had previously only conceded twice in four league games, but endured a miserable meeting with his former club. City’s finishing was excellent, yet the Romanian was nutmegged and twice beaten at his near post.

Vergini 5 – Played Aguero onside for the fourth and never looked comfortable up against Jovetic.

O’Shea 6 – Tried to hold the defence together, but gaps appeared in the Sunderland back line that weren’t evident against Chelsea

Coates 4 – Faced mission impossible after barely playing a game over the last 18 months and paid the price against the magnificent Aguero.

Reveillere 5 – Uncharacteristic couple of slack giveaways and looked leggy after his exertions against Chelsea.

Cattermole 6 – Perhaps inevitably was unable to exert the same influence as he did against Chelsea. Gave the ball away on a couple of occasions and went in the book.

LARSSON 7 – One of the few Sunderland players who looked like he still had some energy. Brilliant pass for Wickham’s goal.

Rodwell 6 – Should have given Sunderland an early lead against his former club, but did show flashes.

Buckley 5 – Set up a golden early opportunity for Rodwell, but produced precious little after that.

Wickham 7 – Persistence earned him a fortuitous second of the season and was one of Sunderland’s liveliest performers before being withdrawn (Alvarez 6 – Run–out will have done him the world of good after a couple of months on the sidelines)

Fletcher 5 – Forced off after a rugged challenge from behind by Boyata and spent too much time slipping on the deck (Altidore 6 – Tried to be the catalyst for a late comeback, but was fighting a lone battle).

MAN CITY: Hart 7, Zabaleta 8, Boyata 7, Demichelis 6, Clichy 7, Fernandinho 6, Toure 7, Nasri 8, Navas 7, Jovetic 8 (Milner 7), Aguero 9 (Lampard 7).
