Sunderland

Jason Steele: First start since the 2-0 defeat to Leeds. Had no chance with first goal but was beaten too easily at his near post for the second. Great double save to thwart sub Ade Lookman. 5

Donald Love: Had a busy night with Everton attacking strongly down the left. One decent second-half cross almost produced a goal for Vaughan. 5

Billy Jones: Not a totally alien role at centre-back. Made one good early block and plenty of headers. 6

Lamine Kone: Skipper for the evening, he made one cracking second-half block on Sandro, making up for losing the ball in the first place. 5

Adam Matthews: Rarely got forward but worked hard at the back in rare left-back start. 5

Didier Ndong: Steady evening in front of the back four when Cats needed some impetus going forward. 5

Darron Gibson: First start since the Carabao Cup win at Carlisle, spending most of this tie deep in his own half. Booked. 5

Jack Rodwell: Had a more advanced midfield slot and won the first corner in 47th minute, but otherwise ineffective. 5

George Honeyman: Never got into the game. 5

Lynden Gooch: One of the more positive performers, made a couple of foward runs and one delicious first-half cross across the box deserved better. 5

James Vaughan: Had an early sight at goal, from a home mistake, but saw little of the ball, until Cats were out of it. Close with a couple of good headers. 6

SUBSCallum McManaman (for Rodwell 55): Badly skewed a shot wide from a decent position with the score at 2-0 but put in a nice cross which Vaughann headed just wide. 5

Jonny Williams (for Honeyman 63): A couple of nice touches in the middle, but came on when the match was as good as over.

Ethan Robson (for Vaughan 86): A late, late run-out. N/A
