Sunderland Under-23s came from behind to beat League Two club Notts County 2-1 to secure their place in the knockout stage of the Checkatrade Trophy last night.

The young side was boosted by a number of first-team players, including comeback stars Vito Mannone and Seb Larsson, who have been missing through injury.

But how did they fare? Richard Mennear gives his match marks after a late show at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland:

Vito Mannone: Made a smart one-handed save to deny Alan Smith’s diving header. Couldn’t do much about the goal. Can be pleased with his return....7

Joshua Robson: Steady at right-back, couple of nervy moments but recovered well....6

George Brady: Calm and composed in the centre of the Sunderland defence.....6

Michael Ledger: Similar to Brady, coped well with the pace of Adam Campbell. The striker got the better of them for the goal though.....6

Tommy Robson: Bright performance from Robson, keen to get forward at every opportunity. Had hands full defensively with Genaro Snijders.....6

Donald Love: Played central midfield and was competitive throughout.....6

Jason Denayer: Lively performance from the Belgian in the opening 45 minutes on his return from injury. Faded second half, shooting was poor.....6

George Honeyman: Busy and always wanted the ball. Curled one effort wide of the post. Struggled to get into the game second half......6

Rees Greenwood: Similar to Honeyman, saw an almost identical effort sail just wide of the post. Sunderland lost their rhythm second half......6

Seb Larsson (C): Sunderland’s key man. Heavily involved in the attacking play, constantly looking to keep Sunderland moving.....7

Joel Asoro: Worked hard up front. Saw one header go wide. Not really his night and was subbed after 58 minutes...6

Subs:

Josh Maja (for Asoro, 58): Super sub! Equalised six minutes from time with a well-taken low finish....7

Luke Molyneux (for Joshua Robson, 78): Made an impact when he came on, lively on the wing and provided the assist for Maja.....7

Subs Not Used: Talbot, Wright, Casey, Pybus, Poame.

Booked: None

Goals: Maja (84), Hollis OG (90)
