Gary Rowell column - Miserable end to a memorable week for Sunderland’s O’Shea

IT’S USUALLY the goalscorers or creative players who grab the glory and make the headlines.

But John O’Shea did just that when he won his 100th cap for the Republic of Ireland.

Playing the world champions and coming away with a point would have been good enough, but to score the equalising goal with the last kick of the game would have been even more than he could have realistically expected.

It’s just a pity that such a great moment for him was followed four days later by quite possibly his worst day in club football, and just shows the extreme highs and lows a footballer can experience in such a short time.
