DARREN Bent took some real stick on his first return to the Stadium of Light since his move to Villa in January.
It wasn’t a surprise!
He was booed every time he touched the ball but in the first half, all that did was to show how little he was involved in the first 45 minutes.
In a way though it was a trademark game for Bent – hardly in it for the majority of the game but still getting the one chance from which he might have won it for his team. It was a superb save by Keiren Westwood to deny him and I breathed a massive sigh of relief when the block was made, because how often do we see former players come back to haunt their clubs? I heard afterwards that he was surprised by the ferocity of the abuse but he really shouldn’t have been.
He left Sunderland fans in a state of shock when he was here one day, gone the next – especially after giving interviews talking about how much he loved the club.
Supporters were angry about that then and obviously still are.
