Ex-Sunderland star Gary Owers has linked up again with his old boss Malcolm Crosby after being named as Gateshead’s assistant manager.
Owers, 46, will leave his position as head of recruitment at Motherwell at the end of the month to link up with the Tynesiders.
Born in Gateshead, Owers spent eight years at Roker Park between 1986 and 1994, featuring in the 1992 FA Cup Final at Wembley which the Black Cats lost 2-0 to Liverpool, with Crosby at the helm.
Crosby said: “I wanted to bring somebody in who I know I can trust. Gary is a very experienced coach, who I have known for a long time.
“He will bring a sense of professionalism to the football club.
“I know that he will get on well with the players, and will look to improve them where necessary.
“I’d like to think we share a lot of the same ideas. We both want to bring success to this club, and we will both be aiming for promotion this season.”
