FOR six long months, Darren Williams lay idle in the confines of his Teesside home and gradually succumbed to boredom.
After leaving Scottish Division One side Dundee, Williams was pencilled in to join Darlington only for the familiar financial woes at the Arena to scupper the move.
While he waited for another opportunity in the Football League, Williams agreed to join then part-timers Gateshead.
But training on two evenings a week and playing on a Saturday did not fill the daytime void for the father-of-four.
DIY and shopping with the wife were no substitute for someone conditioned to the daily demands of training.
Then an opportunity arose to be the regional manager for Stockton-based company Car Loans Express.
Eighteen months later, Williams cuts a content figure behind his studiously tidy desk.
With responsibility for putting together financial packages for both individuals and garages throughout Wearside, Tyneside and Cumbria, the 33-year-old has forged a second successful career for himself.
