THE table is pretty grim viewing for Sunderland right now. One point out of a possible 21, and currently six points behind 17th, writes Matthew Foster.
But it didn’t seem that would be the case in the first half on Saturday.
We came out strong, and took the game to Manchester United, getting a breakthrough when Gardner took his chance well.
We had them against the ropes after that strike, and were the better side. But we needed that second goal, that sucker punch which would leave United with a mountain to climb. But Gardner took too much time with a glorious chance, and Giaccherini was denied by a fantastic save.
On the face of it, 1-0 was never going to be enough against United. And we paid for our missed chances when Januzaj struck the equaliser.
The second, however, was more difficult to see. O’Shea paid no attention to his surroundings, and his wayward clearance was perfect for Januzaj, who took it very well.
The new head coach should be announced this week. And whoever it may be, is sure to have their work cut out on saving our season.
