HEADS up high, fellow Sunderland fans, writes Matthew Foster.
Defeat in a final is hard to swallow, but we gave a good account of ourselves against one of the best sides in England.
First half, we were the better team and deservedly went in at the break 1-0 up.
At that point, the belief was there that we could get through just 45 minutes.
But you simply can’t argue with the quality of the two goals that gave them the lead.
Unbelievable is the only way to describe them – especially Toure’s– and it would have been absolutely wounding for the lads for all their efforts.
We were still in it at 2-1, but the defining moment was Fletcher’s hesitation in front of goal.
Those are the chances you need to take, and his attempt to bring it on his other foot saw the chance fritter away.
We can argue that the third was harsh, considering the foul before it. But that’s sometimes just how the cookie crumbles.
We sang loud and proud, as London was invaded by a sea of red and white.
And who knows, maybe we can do it all again if we win next Sunday!
Ha’way the Lads!
